NO. 280 GLENCOE (MOSQUITO GULCH) - Glencoe was formerly called Mosquito Gulch. The business portion of the town was on the north side of Mosquito Gulch, but not one of the old buildings remains. The mines were first worked by the Mexicans in the early 1850s - quartz mining predominated but there was some placer mining.

The guys at the American Legion Hall confirmed that the area was Mosquito Gulch. They directed us to a plaque in the parking lot that honored the early Scottish Settlers. (The original Glencoe was an historic town in Scotland. The address for the American Legion Hall is: 2769 Upper Dorray Rd, Glencoe, CA 95232. The Post Office is on SR 26, 0.1 mine South of Norwich Mine Road.
